What’s Your Fear Factor?

“When you take a leap into the well of fear, you may notice that things do not feel very good there. When you retreat into that darkness, things may seem overwhelming and impossible. You may become ‘paralyzed’ and find that you are moving AWAY from your dreams instead of INTO them.

What price do you pay when fear takes hold? Notice what happens on the physical level – perhaps constriction of muscle, a tightness in your chest, shallow breathing, or cold sweat. When you are lost in fear, what emotions creep in? Where do your thoughts go? What happens when you are happy and full of excitement?

When you can identify your fears and embrace them with love and compassion, then you will find that the time you spend visiting them DECREASES and the time you spend in excitement, joyful curiosity, wonder, and PURE LOVE INCREASES.

What Do You Expect?

The New York City subway system is one of my greatest teachers.

The other night I was waiting for the #3 train to take me from 14th St. to my stop uptown in Harlem. The #3 is an express train and on a good night I can make it uptown in less than 30 minutes. Alas, this was not a ‘good’ night – all express and local trains were switched to the local track.

“Well,” I thought angrily, “now it’s going to take me longer to get home than I expected, and I’ve got to pack my bag and prepare my lunch for tomorrow. This sucks. I probably won’t get to bed until 1am.”

As the subway moved slowly uptown I became more irritated. “This train should be moving faster!”

At 23rd St., 34th St., Times Square and several other stops the train was delayed and sat motionless with the doors open. “Those doors should be closing now,” I said aloud.

“Really?” answered my voice in my head. “Should the train really be doing anything but what it’s doing now? You could get up and go to another subway line, take a bus or a cab, or even walk home. What you are doing now is painful.”

I took a deep breath and sat up, long and tall, in my seat. I had been leaning, knees on thighs, shoulders hunched and forward with my head in my hands, rubbing my furrowed brow. I looked at the clock on my Blackberry. I had been lost in stressful thoughts about the train (and a few other things that my negative thinking dug up) for nearly 30 minutes and my body was showing me what happens when my mind takes a stroll into the land of expectation.

“If you think you can lead a happy life by going through your days with a list of expectations, please think again.

There is nothing that is guaranteed to go exactly as you think it should.

‘My kids should behave.’ ‘My husband should keep the bathroom clean.’ ‘The trains should be on time.’ ‘Everyone should be happy.’

Those ‘shoulds’ can lead to disappointment, frustration and anger.

What if you just let things be? Or, ask that things be done or kept a certain way without expecting that they will.

Release your self from the nightmarish grip of expectation and you will find that your ride home is always pleasant and that your heart is filled with gratitude for the way things are. What else is there but what is?” – At One

You Irritate the S— Out of Me!

Life is fascinating.

I went to the Cosi café on 13th St. and Broadway on Monday afternoon to have some tea and write about allowing and accepting. As I waited for my computer to boot up I heard a woman sitting near me say to her male companion, “Do you have to say that? You irritate the shit out of me.” Perfect fodder for my blog, I thought.

When I logged on to Cosi’s free internet service, I saw the slogan ‘Cosi: Life Should Be Delicious.’ Hmm… How can life be delicious when we are irritated by the behavior of another?

“When you say that someone is irritating you, you are certainly not allowing them or your self to enjoy what is. A more honest and responsible way to express that would be, ‘I see that I am not happy right now because my thoughts about what you said are irritating me.’

When you identify the source of your irritation, anger, sadness, jealousy, resentment, or fear you can instantly loosen the grip that YOUR THOUGHTS have on you. Yes, it is ultimately your thoughts about any situation that lead to negative feelings and sometimes actions (and words) that cause you to look away from the infinite beauty and excitement of any moment.” – At One

My friend Eduardo is a great teacher. Last year he told me that his goal in life was to be happy. I see that happiness keeps finding him. He holds the intention of happiness and it shows up. Perfect and easy (if you let it be).

We are what we think. What we focus on grows. That’s the Law of Attraction and Manifestation. How is it working for you?

Is That Love?

Have you ever noticed that when you try to convince someone that your way of loving / caring / honoring / appreciating / being is the ‘right’ way, it most often feels like something other than love?

What’s up with that?

“If you want someone to see things your way, try first to see things their way. Maybe there is something wonderful about their way that you are overlooking.

Love sees everything as possible. Love allows. Love says, ‘That could be interesting.’

Love also sees that yes and no are equally loving answers. When you say yes when you want to say no, is that love? When you say no when you want to say yes, is that love?

Naming What You Love

The title of today’s post was inspired by a chapter in the book Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Simple Abundance is filled with “quotes, poems, meditations and practical exercises for every day of a woman’s year.” Don’t worry guys, there is version for you titled A Man’s Journey to Simple Abundance. (Why do I have the ladies version? Simple: I liked the quotes and my friend Robin was giving the book away. Thanks Robin! BTW, for years I had a copy of the book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom by Dr. Christiane Northrup. Don’t be afraid to learn about women, gentlemen.)

Back to Simple Abundance. In the chapter that I happened upon this morning (in my search for a love topic), Breathnach invites the reader to ask the question “What is it that I truly love?”, and states, “The only opinion that counts from now on is your own.”

On Sunday I was working with a group of men at the monthly NYC Easton Mountain gathering and asked them to tell five other men in the room what they were passionate about. I invited them to name five passions. “I am passionate about my dogs.” “I am passionate about teaching.” “I am passionate about sex,” came the responses. It was easy for some to rattle off five passions and challenging for others.

“Telling your self and others what excites you and what inspires you is one way to attract more of that into your life. Knowing what you love brings self-awareness and enlightenment to all areas of your life. You could even begin to ask your self ‘What more can I open myself to knowing and loving?’ That attitude will attract peace of mind and peace of heart.” – At One

What, or who, do you love? Can you – dare you – name it?

Here are five things that I love:

1) Naps on the couch
2) The ocean after a storm
3) Staying up all night to finish reading a book
4) Laughing with friends
5) Sharing inspirational messages

(I could also add chocolate, sex, my family, working from home, traveling to foreign countries, meditation…)
