What Are You Doing In That Box?

“When you open to possibility, possibility enters. When you open to YOU, YOU enter.”
– from a meditation on the morning of 2/21/10

I met Lisa Nichols yesterday afternoon. If you don’t know who she is, I highly recommend that you find out (you could start with The Secret or Lisa’s book No Matter What), check out her inspirational story and get into one of her transformational workshops or other events ASAP.

Lisa knocked my socks off when she spoke at Sacred Center NY. I was so impressed I stayed for her 2-hour workshop after the service. By the end of that I was a devotee, so when she asked us to continue the conversation at her hotel room I practically offered to carry her there on my back.

The main thing I took away from that meeting, besides a new business and new business partners – which I’ll share more about soon so that you can share the wealth, was (yet again) “Get Out of The Box!”

“When you limit your self based on beliefs and stories from the past, you take a back seat in your own life.

All of the could haves, should haves, and would haves don’t matter today, right here and NOW. Once you move beyond the shelter of what was, you’ll find that what is and what can be is far more exciting and often more comfortable and prosperous. Love the stories and know that you can leave them behind. You will be just fine without them!

Where in your life are you being quiet and small? What do you want for your self? What kind of life do you dream of living? When will you start living it?

Are you willing to take a chance and jump out of the box once and for all?”

Today’s Powerful and Positive Affirmation is:
“I am in the process of growing the life of my dreams. I have all that I need, all of the time. All is well.”

Big thanks today to Lisa Nichols, Sacred Center NY, Greg Halpen and his Profound Visibility commitment/teachings, NYC libraries, the McBurney YMCA, my breath and body, sugar-free days and nights, sexy men and women who love their bodies, my book agent, editor and publisher, Mondays, and the excitement that new awareness brings.

Thanks and peace to all!

What Do You Expect?

The New York City subway system is one of my greatest teachers.

The other night I was waiting for the #3 train to take me from 14th St. to my stop uptown in Harlem. The #3 is an express train and on a good night I can make it uptown in less than 30 minutes. Alas, this was not a ‘good’ night – all express and local trains were switched to the local track.

“Well,” I thought angrily, “now it’s going to take me longer to get home than I expected, and I’ve got to pack my bag and prepare my lunch for tomorrow. This sucks. I probably won’t get to bed until 1am.”

As the subway moved slowly uptown I became more irritated. “This train should be moving faster!”

At 23rd St., 34th St., Times Square and several other stops the train was delayed and sat motionless with the doors open. “Those doors should be closing now,” I said aloud.

“Really?” answered my voice in my head. “Should the train really be doing anything but what it’s doing now? You could get up and go to another subway line, take a bus or a cab, or even walk home. What you are doing now is painful.”

I took a deep breath and sat up, long and tall, in my seat. I had been leaning, knees on thighs, shoulders hunched and forward with my head in my hands, rubbing my furrowed brow. I looked at the clock on my Blackberry. I had been lost in stressful thoughts about the train (and a few other things that my negative thinking dug up) for nearly 30 minutes and my body was showing me what happens when my mind takes a stroll into the land of expectation.

“If you think you can lead a happy life by going through your days with a list of expectations, please think again.

There is nothing that is guaranteed to go exactly as you think it should.

‘My kids should behave.’ ‘My husband should keep the bathroom clean.’ ‘The trains should be on time.’ ‘Everyone should be happy.’

Those ‘shoulds’ can lead to disappointment, frustration and anger.

What if you just let things be? Or, ask that things be done or kept a certain way without expecting that they will.

Release your self from the nightmarish grip of expectation and you will find that your ride home is always pleasant and that your heart is filled with gratitude for the way things are. What else is there but what is?” – At One

What expectations are you harboring?

Today’s Powerful and Positive Affirmation is:
“I am open to experiencing everything as it is.”

Thanks go out to Jean at Nurture’s Path for giving me an opportunity to see and say what I’m good at, clients who teach me valuable lessons, a sweaty Spin class, friendly bank tellers, Sound Circle participants who fill the room with sounds of love, waking up to the sun, new and prosperous business, my book agent, editor and publisher, Narrativ Inc., and a chocolate-free day.

Thanks and peace to all.

Why Wait Until Friday?

It’s Friday again, which seems to be a cause for celebration for many people. And why not? Their weekday routine is ending and maybe there will be some excitement, something different (like Sunday’s Super Bowl) to look forward to.

“I’m really looking forward to Friday!”

“Can’t wait until Friday!”

“Thank God it’s Friday!”

What if we applied that same enthusiasm to Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and even Saturday and Sunday?

“Imagine saving all of your excitement, all of your positive thoughts, all of your enthusiasm for one day of the week. What if you were to spread that joy around, to give as much value to the other days, to hold Tuesday in as much esteem as you do Friday? What is the difference, really, between those days?

Reclaim the EVERYDAY joy that can be found wherever you are. Whenever you choose to acknowledge it, joy shows up. It’s that easy. Seek and you shall find. Look for ways to make every day a special day.

What are you waiting for?”

Amen.

Today’s Powerful and Positive Affirmation is:
“I live my life to the fullest every day and in every way. I choose joy.”

Today I give thanks to my clear and concise vision, to Bob and Ancil at the McBureny YMCA for the inspiration for today’s post, home cooked meals, Bank of America, financial freedom, my home at the beach, my book agent, editor and publisher, the presence of ‘the grandmothers’, Jill Anderson at http://www.JillLynnDesign.com, the alignment of art with business (for fun and profit!).

Please note: The ‘Friday’ image above comes from the blog/web site Life Organizer.

Thanks and peace to all.

This Is To Mother You

I was standing in the kitchen chopping vegetables and listening to an assortment of music from my iTunes catalog last night when the following lyrics from the song This Is To Mother You (written and originally performed by Sinead O’Connor on her Gospel Oak EP) beckoned me to be still and listen closely:

“All mistakes made in distress
All your unhappiness
I will take away with my kiss
Yes I will give you tenderness

For child I am so glad I found you
Although my arms have always been around you
Sweet bird although you did not see me
I saw you.”

Although I’ve heard the song dozens of times I was absolutely mesmerized. Following an impulse and a recognizable call to sit in meditation, I hit the replay button on the iTunes program and walked into my dark living room in time to see the moon – half full, golden and looming large in the sky – nestled between two buildings. I sat on the floor and closed my eyes. Images of what I call the Divine Mother began to surface. The Virgin of Guadeloupe, Kuan-Yin, Kali, and an infinite number of energies that called themselves ‘the grandmothers’ sang to me and caressed me.

“All the pain that you have known
All the violence in your soul
All the wrong things you have done
I will take from you when I come”

Memories of tender and nurturing moments with lovers, friends, and family brought tears of joy to my eyes.

“And I’m here to mother you
To comfort you and get you through
Through when your nights are lonely
Through when your dreams are only blue
This is to mother you”

Sometimes I find it best not to question those experiences, so I just let it unfold. When I went to bed I could still hear the voice of ‘the grandmothers’ and see their light shining brightly over my arms, legs and head.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

Who is mothering you?

Today’s Positive and Powerful Affirmation is:
“I mother myself all ways.”

Today I am grateful for divine guidance, mothers all other the world and beyond, trust, Sinead O’Connor, music that moves me, a soft touch, dreamless sleep, early morning inspirational talks, Pandora, Nurture’s Path, deep breaths, and home-cooked meals.

Thanks and peace to all.

The Trouble With Assuming

I visited a wonderful healer named Angelica last Friday. During our time together she used the word assumptions, as in “There were a lot of assumptions in that relationship”. When she said that a huge lightbulb went off in my head and in my heart. Her words timed perfectly (of course!) with what I was tossing around in my head and which was causing, as Angelica said, “congestion.”

What happens when we make assumptions and do not communicate to the other party what we are assuming? That was the focus of a recent meditation and this is what came to me:

“When you allow your self the pleasure of knowing your self, than there is nothing to assume. In other words, know your self, love your self, and anything that is assumed by another will not bother you.

If you are the one doing the assuming, please know that there is all ways the possibility that another’s thoughts and actions may not match what you expect of them. You may assume that the other is very understanding in regard to a certain subject, so you talk and talk and talk about it, only to find much later that the other was only tolerating your behavior, not allowing you to be you, and that tolerance was causing conflicting thoughts and emotions.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to ask, ‘How do you feel about this?’, or ‘What are your thoughts regarding that?’ In this way, you have given your self and the other an opportunity to express what may be kept inside. And then you go on with your day, awake, alert and aware of the infinite possibilities that make up each moment.”

Assume with caution!

Today’s Powerful and Positive Affirmation is: “I allow All That Is to flow through me and to me. I open my heart and mind to endless beauty and abundance.”

A great big gratitude wave to all of the assumers out there, to sunny mid-week mornings, Rosa, Eduardo, Steph, Deborah, my former and future relationships, the power of meditation, prosperous new business opportunities, and my book agent, editor and publisher.

Amen.

Thanks and peace to all!

Your Impulse: Can You Just Give In To It?

Yesterday I wrote about following my impulse in writing. Without a known topic I gave myself permission to let my fingers and hands find their way to the computer keys and I let whatever wanted to appear on the screen show itself. What came out was a few lines about nothing.

Sitting down to write today’s piece I gathered my mental notes and news statistics about the blockbuster film Avatar. When I thought I was ready to type and fill up the page with some cohesive verse about the importance of a movie like Avatar my mind went blank. Then I heard a familiar voice say, “Follow your impulse and do what you did yesterday.”

I ignored the voice, just like I did yesterday, just as I’ve done a million times in my life. Hmm… And at what price?

I’ve decided to embark on what may turn out to be an interesting experiment and let this weeks posts write themselves. It sometimes happens like that anyway. When I go into ‘the creativity zone’ I often wonder who is doing the writing, talking, drumming. singing, etc. Let’s see what comes through today.

“Whenever you find your self resisting your true nature, you may experience discomfort, doubt, fear or uncertainty. Can you really be who you say you are when your heart and mind are at odds with each other, when your ‘true’ self is left to languish?

What on Earth would your life be like if you chose to follow just one impulse each day? Just ONE impulse out of the multitude that attempts to be seen and heard in a 24-hour period. Do you think it would be any more painful to follow an impulse than not to? What are you afraid of? Being wrong? Being right? Failing? Succeeding?

What if you TRUSTED your self enough to break out of the illusion of beliefs that have kept you from living where and how you want to live? Can you imagine what your life – your world – would look like? Can you imagine? Can you? We invite you to TRY.”

OK! There you have it.

Today’s affirmation: “Positive energy flows through me all ways. I live my life the way I want to.”

Today I give thanks to another impulse, my open heart and mind, the thrill of giving in to something that is not so new, anyone and everyone who has ever inspired me by allowing their impulsive genius to shine through, ‘negative’ assessments, my teachers at the New York Shamanic Circle, the Skype video cam, curiosity, chocolate, and my healthy body.

Amen.

Thanks and peace to all!

Come Out Of Hiding

My friend Greg has declared this year to be The Year of Profound Visibility. When I read his blog about the topic , it prompted the following meditation message.

“When you say that you want to be seen and heard, the immediate response of the Universe is to provide you with an abundance of opportunities to be that.

When you say that you want to come out of hiding and let the world see you for who you are, the Universe responds by bringing you home to you, asking you to acknowledge the beauty, the intelligence, the wit and the charm that is you.

When you say that now is the moment, the Universe says, “Every moment is the moment, every moment that passed was THE moment, and now you are knowing that.”

Let the Universe (which includes your friends, family, co-workers, the person you bump into on the street, the traffic, the sunshine, the clouds, the mountains, the streams, the stones, the animals at the zoo, etc.) show you who you are. Your job is to embrace it (or not!) – ALL OF IT – with love. You love you and all that is around you, and then you will be seen and heard and felt and acknowledged and loved and welcomed, and then – surprise! – none of it will even matter because there is no one, no thing that can see you or hear you but you.

Come out of hiding. Stop hiding from your self and open your arms to All That Is. What else is there?”

OK! I’ll meditate on that.

Thanks to Greg for the profound inspiration, Fred for the focus that comes with a daily action call, Robin for sending and resending info that sometimes eludes me, Holly for cooking, my guru cat for teaching me about asking for what I want, my hands and feet, my breath, my heart and lungs, my Y students, and a good nights sleep.

You can read more about Greg’s success plan on his web site,The Gay Guys Love Coach.
